ARTIST REVIEW - BRIAN BLAQ
Brian Blaq’s DJ’ing career extends back to over 10 years when he started DJ’ing in high school.  During this time he crossed paths with music producer and DJ Mbuso who had just started DJ’ing.

Like a typical story of most DJ’s Brian started his radio career at a campus radio station when he enrolled at the Boston Media House. Not long after a friend advised that he visits the Voice of Soweto as they would invite students to act as DJ’s for 30 minutes.  Brian’s talent impressed many and he found himself being offered a job as a DJ at the station.

He started off by doing graveyard shows, but it wasn’t long before management picked up on the young man’s true talents! As a relatively new radio DJ, he would stand in for various DJ’s during prime time.

When Zak Dakile left the station, Brian was offered to do the drive time show.  Unfortunately due to school commitments he could not take the slot.  Despite that Brian’s talent surely opened many doors in the radio industry. Soon after his time at Voice of Soweto, he auditioned for a slot at Jozi FM and was successful in his efforts.

After a short space of time he was offered the opportunity to co-host a Saturday morning show with DJ Hloks.  This proved to be so successful that he was offered his own dance show on Saturday afternoons.

Brian constantly proved to management that he was good at what he does and eventually was offered to do the breakfast show from Monday to Friday (where he was competing with the likes of Bob Mabena and DJ Fresh).  Ironically at the time, Brian was being mentored by radio legend Segale Mogotsi. Unfortunately due to other work and school commitments, Brian made an exit from the industry.

He later came back with a renewed focus and commitment, upon doing so he joined the Soulcandi family; it was then that he branched out and started organizing events as well and being featured at various radio stations (including Jozi FM, 5FM and YFM).

Brian’s skills caught the attention of locally renowned Deep house DJ Vinny Da Vinci and he started featuring him on a number of his ‘Deep Soul Sessions’.  During this time Brian started hosting his own Blaq Soul Session to broaden and grow his brand at the time.

It is challenging to class Brian Blaq in a particular genre of music as he plays a variety of music from Hip Hop to House music to the ever popular Kwaito music.

Brian Blaq is a DJ of Soul, a DJ whose aim is to expose people to the beautiful side of soulful music. He’s the type of DJ that's never predictable, his sets are always unpredictable but always of a high standard. Currently he is in the studio with two other DJ's doing various remixes and he’s looking at making a comeback on the radio airwaves.
