Album & Artist Review: DJ Thobs - Colours of Soul
THE DJ:  Thobs is one of the country’s premier female DJs, and she is set to become one of its hottest producers with the release of her debut artist album for Bass Breaks & Beats in July 2010. This spin sister caught the house music bug in 1994 but only got her introduction to pitch-bending and beat-blending world of turntables in March 2001. It didn’t take her long to make an impression though, and not long after she started stringing deep sets together she caught the attention of radio show host (and club groove guru) Glen Lewis, who heard a demo of hers on air and immediately recruited her to join his stable of female DJs at Skeelo & Pebbles. This led to a defining moment in her career: the release of a mix CD for the Skeelo & Pebbles empire. The year was 2004; the name of the CD was SABC 1’s ‘Sgubhu sa Mampela Vol.2’; the impression it left on South Africa’s listening and dancing public was as deep as the tracks it contained. THE MUSIC  Her profile got a further boost in 2009 when she was invited to mix one of the discs on the platinum monster-selling ‘House Afrika Sessions’ CD, which showcased the startling rhythmic talents on the Bass Breaks & Beats label. And it’s under the auspices of this promising label that she’ll be releasing her debut artist album in 2010 called “Colors of Soul”.
