Bass Breaks & Beats Records - Interview by Smalz
For the label to exist what were the defining moments? What is it that made you realize that by forming BBB Records you will add value in the house/ dance scene in SA and international? 2lani: The house music Scene took a turn whereby there were just two genres focused on namely: electro and commercial. There were a lot of deep house producers who were turned down by record labels simply because deep house was not recognized. We then felt the need to house them as we believed they should stick to what they are passionate about and not just venture into other genres for the need to be accepted. 2. Where is the house music/ dance scene in South Africa presently? With that in mind where does the label see itself in that environment? Why? 2lani: At the moment house music is still at its peak in SA. We have something different to offer to the industry as we provide an alternative gnre to what is considered as popular in the country at the moment. We bring it back to its roots where music is for listening and not for money or business. 3. If for some reason BBB Records gets given exclusive rights to create and pioneer a new dance genre/sound to the South African audience as well as international, how would you go about it? Why? 2lani: If a new genre of music had to be introduced to the masses it would have elements of DEEP, maybe with a fusion of Jazz in it. Something that is a bit underated at the moment. I guess we’d just stick to our DEEp sounds but try to add something different to it, we just not sure what though as deep house is the only thing that sounds perfect in our ears at the moment. Implementing it would rely on how well we believe in our music. If you are confident that what you doing is good then it shouldn’t be a problem convincing other people to believe in it too. 5. By understanding the following terms “bleeding-edge” & “cutting-edge”, which of these terms does BBB Records subscribe to? Why? 2lani: We believe we are Cutting Edge as we are still rooted in the deep house genre and are at the forefront of that industry. WE LEAD and THEY FOLLOW. 6. How does the label define deep house music – considering the fact that the label’s debut compilation in SA titled “Kasi Deep” was a deep house album? 2lani: Deep house is MUSIC with EMOTION. Music that speaks to the heart and soul as opposed to that that speaks with the feet alone. 7. What is the label’s value proposition to the house/dance fraternity in South Africa and international? Why? 2lani: We are 100% deep house. We’ve been behind it all the way and are the only label in SA that supports that genre as it has been greatly neglected in the music industry. 8. With your value proposition in mind - Why should other musicians and dance music audiences at large believe you? 2lani: We’ve always stuck to Deep house as mentioned above. We believe that it is timeless and by supporting it and giving it our undivided attention we have already convinced many in following our producers and listen to what we have to offer. 9. In your opinion - what’s so special about the South African dance/house scene and why should the world take notice? 2lani: Production wise everyone is experimenting and are striving to bring versatility while maintaining the distinct African sound. They are learning to pus certain limits and boundaries while managing to compete with world renowned producers. 10. Does the label prefer underground or mainstream house music? Why? 2lani: Underground. Its timeless and will last for many generations as long as music still exists. 11. Is the underground & mainstream in competition with one another in South Africa? Is this phenomenon different that anywhere else in the world? 2lani: There is great competition between the two. The only difference is that mainstream is marketed more than underground. People appreciate underground for its exclusivity. Mainstream is constantly played on radio stations and with time loses its hold on people. It is the same all over the world. 12. Describe the label in three words? (Not your mission statement) 2lani: BASS BREAKS and BEATS (as simple as that) 13. How has been the response in SA and internationally – judging from the music you have put out there already? Why? 2lani: It has been unbelievable because people are taking notice of the label and what we have to offer. We meet people who constantly compliment us on the great job we doing in making sure that there is recognition given to deep house producers and DJs. 14. How do you interpret the term “rhythm”? 2lani: Rhythm is that inner reaction to music that not only works on your feet but your heart and soul. It is that unrehearsed and involuntary movement of the body and soul in reaction to a good sound.
